Recent work in the Farrer lab at the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health and Centre for Applied Neurogenetics has centered around the identification of several genetic links to Parkinson’s disease, including major Mendelian mutations in SNCA (a hallmark of Lewy body pathology), LRRK2 (confers greatest population attributable risk of PD, worldwide), DCTN1 (results in Perry syndrome), VPS35 and RME-8 (which highlight neuronal endosomal-plasma membrane receptor trafficking). These discoveries are propelling us forward, and we’ve now gone on to make and characterize the neurobiology associated with these genetic links in disease models.
